.NET Framework is an Integrated environment for developing and executing applications using different programming languages, such as VB.NET, C#, J# . . .etc. It provides the necessary environment in which developers can create and execute various types of applications, including console applications, Windows applications, Web applications, and Web services. .NET Framework has seen many upgrades since the release of its first version in 2002. A description of all the versions of .NET Framework that has been released till now is given as follows:
.NET Framework 1.0
· It is the first version of the .NET Framework, released on 13 February 2002 and available for Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP and later versions.
· It is a part of Visual Studio .NET 2002, which is the first version of Visual Studio .NET.
· It has CLR version 1.0.
.NET Framework 1.1
· This is the first major upgrade of .NET Framework and was released on April 3, 2003.
· It is available on its own as redistributable package (means that this software can be redistributed with modification, also known as open source) or in a Software Development kit (SDK).
· It is also a part of Visual Studio .NET 2003, which is the second version of Visual Studio .NET.
· It is the first version of the .NET Framework to be included as part of the Windows OS, shipping with Windows Server 2003.
· It is the last version for Windows NT 4.0.
· In contrast to .NET Framework 1.0, .NET Framework has in-built support for mobile ASP.NET controls and ODBC and Oracle databases.
· It also has support for Internet Protocol version 6 (shortly known as IPv6).
· It has CLR version 1.1.
.NET Framework 2.0
· It is the second major upgrade of .NET Framework and was released on January 22, 2006.
· It is also a part of Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
· It is the last version of .NET Framework that has the support of Windows 2000.
· It has a number of Application Programming Interfaces (API) changes.
· It contains many new ASP.NET Web controls and data controls.
· It also contains new personalization features for ASP.NET, for example support for themes, skins, master pages, and WebParts.
· It has CLR version 2.0.
.NET Framework 3.0
· It is the third major upgrade of .NET Framework and was released on November 21, 2006. Formerly it was known by WinFX.
· Included in Visual Studio 2005.
· It contains a set of managed code APIs (managed code is the code that runs under CLR), which are an integral part of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
· It does not contain any major architectural changes and it contains the same version of CLR that was included with .NET Framework 2.0
· It contains four major new components, which are given as follows:
o Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), formerly code-named Avalon; a new user interface subsystem and API based on XML and Vector graphics, which uses 3D computer graphics hardware and Direct 3D technologies.
o Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), formerly code-named Indigo; a service-oriented messaging system which allows program to interoperate locally or remotely similar to web services.
o Windows Workflow Foundation (WWF) allows for building of task automation and integrated transactions using workflows.
o Windows Card Space (WCS), formerly code-named InfoCard; a software component which securely stores a person’s digital identities and provides a unified interface for choosing the identity for a particular transaction, such as logging in to a website.
.NET Framework 3.5
· It was released on 19 November 2007, but is not included with Windows Server 2008.
· As with .NET Framework 3.0, version 3.5 uses the CLR of version 2.0.
· Default in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2.
· Included in Visual Studio 2008.
· In addition, it installs .NET Framework 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1, 3.0 SP2 with 3.5 SP1, which adds some methods and properties to the BCL classes in version 2.0 which are required for version 3.5 features such as Language Integrated Query (LINQ).
· Added a new feature named AJAX-enabled websites.
· The changes done in the version, doesn’t affect applications written for version 2.0.
· It has CLR version 2.0.
.NET Framework 4
· The latest version of Framework 4 is released on 12 April 2010.
· Included in Visual Studio 2010.
· Includes a new version of the CLR, expanded base class libraries, and new features such as the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF), dynamic language runtime (DLR), and code contracts.
· Parallel Extensions to improve support for parallel computing, which target multi-core or distributed systems. To this end they included technologies like PLINQ (Parellel LINQ) a parallel implementation of the LINQ engine, and Tasked Parallel Library, which exposes parallel constructs via method calls.
· New VB.NET and C# language features, such as statements lambdas, implicit line continuations, dynamic dispatch, named parameters, and optional parameters.
· Not installed as part of the Windows Operating System, but can be installed separately on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and later versions of Windows.
